Why Your Scalp Feels Oily But Hair Feels Dry

Why Your Scalp Feels Oily But Hair Feels Dry

Oily roots and dry ends at the same time — this is called combination hair, and it's one of the most common and misunderstood hair types. Using the wrong products for one problem makes the other worse. Here's the science behind it and how to fix both simultaneously.

Why This Happens

1. Sebum Can't Travel Far Enough

Sebum is produced at the scalp and travels down the hair shaft by gravity and brushing. In long hair, sebum simply can't reach the ends — leaving roots oily and ends dry. The longer the hair, the more pronounced this imbalance becomes.

2. Over-Washing Strips the Scalp

Washing too frequently strips the scalp of its natural oils, triggering overproduction of sebum at the roots — while the ends, already starved of moisture, become even drier from the harsh shampoo. A vicious cycle that worsens both problems.

3. Heat Damage at the Ends

Flat irons and curling wands are applied primarily to the mid-lengths and ends — drying them out progressively while the roots remain untouched and oily. Heat damage at the ends accelerates moisture loss.

4. Wrong Products Applied Everywhere

Using a moisturizing shampoo designed for dry hair makes oily roots worse. Using a clarifying shampoo designed for oily hair strips the already-dry ends further. Combination hair requires a zone-based approach.

The Fix: Zone-Based Care

The Scalp Care Serum (2-pack, gentle exfoliation, non-greasy, lightweight) addresses the oily scalp zone — apply only to the scalp to gently exfoliate buildup and regulate sebum production without touching the dry ends.

For the dry ends, the PP405 Lightweight Scalp Serum with hyaluronic acid and biotin provides targeted hydration — non-greasy formula that can also be applied to dry ends for moisture without adding oil to the roots.

Combination Hair Rules

  • Shampoo roots only — let the lather rinse through ends without scrubbing
  • Conditioner on ends only — never the roots
  • Apply scalp treatments to the scalp only
  • Apply moisturizing products to ends only
  • Wash every 2–3 days — not daily

Combination hair is a zone problem. Treat each zone differently. Fix both at the same time.
