Volume isn't just about products — it's about layering the right techniques in the right order. Here's how to build volume that actually lasts from root to tip.
The Volume Layering System
Layer 1: Volumizing Shampoo (Foundation)
Volume starts in the shower. A volumizing shampoo lifts the hair shaft and removes the weight of buildup and heavy conditioner. Use the Philip Kingsley Brilliant Body & Volume Set — volumizing shampoo, conditioner, and plumping cream that builds body from the first wash.
Layer 2: Mousse on Damp Hair (Structure)
Apply a volumizing mousse to damp hair before blow drying — this is the structural layer that gives hair something to hold onto. The Philip Kingsley Volumizing Froth Styling Mousse (11.69 oz) provides root-lifting, long-lasting volume with medium hold — apply from roots to ends and comb through before blow drying.
For fine hair specifically, the Keranique Volumizing Mousse is a thickening, anti-frizz foam for fine, straight, wavy, and curly hair — lightweight enough not to weigh hair down while still providing structure.
Layer 3: Root Lift Spray (Targeted Lift)
After applying mousse, spray the Marc Anthony Big Volume Root Lifting Spray directly at the roots for targeted lift. This is the layer that creates height at the crown — the most visible area for volume.
Layer 4: Blow Dry Technique (Heat Setting)
- Flip hair upside down and rough dry to 70% with fingers
- Section hair and use a round brush, directing heat at the roots
- Roll the brush under as you dry each section for lift
- Finish every section with cool air to set the shape
Layer 5: Finishing Spray (Lock It In)
Once styled, lock volume in place with a flexible-hold finishing spray. Spray from underneath the hair upward for lift — not downward, which flattens.
Volume Layering Tips
- Each layer should be lighter than the last — heavy products on top collapse volume
- Apply all products before heat — heat activates and sets the formula
- Don't touch hair while it cools — this is when volume sets
Volume is built in layers. Skip one and it collapses. Use all five and it lasts all day.
