Layers add movement, dimension, and shape to hair — but growing them out takes months. Extensions can create the appearance of perfectly layered hair instantly, without a single cut. Here's exactly how to fake layers with extensions.

How to Fake Layers with Extensions

The Concept

Real layers are created by cutting hair at different lengths throughout the head. Fake layers are created by placing shorter extensions at the top and longer extensions at the bottom — the length difference between the wefts creates the visual effect of layers without any cutting.

Step 1: Choose Two Extension Lengths

Select extensions in two lengths — typically 14–16 inches for the upper layers and 20–22 inches for the lower layers. The difference in length between the two sets creates the layered effect.

For the shorter layer: the DOORES Chocolate Brown Clip-In Extensions (14 inch, 130g, 9 pcs) — virgin human hair with invisible edge clips for a seamless blend.

For the longer layer: the SURNEL Dark Brown Clip-In Extensions (18 inch, 120g, 6 pcs) — real human hair in a matching dark brown for a natural layered look.

Step 2: Place Shorter Extensions at the Top

Section hair horizontally at the crown. Clip the shorter extensions (14–16 inch) into the upper sections — these become the "face-framing" and "crown" layers that add movement around the face and at the top.

Step 3: Place Longer Extensions at the Bottom

Clip the longer extensions (18–22 inch) into the lower sections at the nape and sides — these become the "underlayer" that adds length and fullness at the bottom.

Step 4: Blend with Curling or Waving

After clipping in, curl or wave both your natural hair and all extensions together. When all sections are styled the same way, the length differences between the wefts create a natural-looking layered effect with movement and dimension.

Step 5: Trim for a Perfect Blend (Optional)

Have a stylist trim the extensions after application to blend them perfectly with your natural hair. Even a small trim creates a much more natural-looking layered result.

Fake Layer Tips

  • The bigger the length difference between sets, the more dramatic the layers
  • Match extension color to your mid-lengths for the most natural blend
  • Curl all sections together after application for seamless blending
  • Face-framing pieces should be the shortest for the most flattering effect

Layers in minutes, not months. Two extension lengths. One seamless layered look.
